ABSTRACTS: In 2005 my work with realism led me to realize that on an essential and profound level, the perception of reality resides in a relationship between perceiver and 'thing.' One affecting and influencing the next, an idea also explored in quantum physics. My paintings became explorations of the relationship between the space represented by the canvas surface and an inserted, painted 'element.'
I chose rectilinear shapes and restricted their alignment to be parallel to the canvas edges. I retained the working habits of watercolour in that neither shape nor colour could be changed once painted.
The approach forces each decision to be deliberate and each subsequent shape acutely attuned to the one before. Paradoxically, this intellectual process requires a heightened intuitive awareness of the unfolding relationships. Over the course of sixteen years the abstract works has encompassed a myriad of human interactions with dynamic structures such as culture, experience, memory, intuition, culture, and thinking.
